OVER THE LAST YEAR OR TWO…..

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

After the recent heavy weight regime of painting we have undertaken i got to thinking about a few of my favourites that i had dropped that were perhaps being overlooked or beginning to be forgotten. A lot of our pieces and pictures weren’t included on the flickr or on our all new website so thought i might have a quick look back. I’m really not one of those writers that dwells on the past but every now and then its cool to fill in a few gaps and see how all the dots join together..

Certain days stick in your head..

AROE ANIE SEEN & ODISY
middle street Brighton, The whole day was a bit surreal but special respects go out to GARY for a lot of help on the background and NOPE from australia that felt it right to do a trolley dash out of the asda in the marina then walk all of his scrumped bounty about two miles to hang out..

kings destroy..

COPE2 AROE & JANO.
The pit London, certain UK egos were out of control on this occasion so i’ve omitted their part of the wall. It was absolutely pouring down but we soldiered on regardless..

Sleeping giants..

AROE & RIME.
Brighton, RIME is a don, try dropping a piece next to a dude that understands every line and colour combination before its even started, he might be one of the most natural graffiti writers i’ve ever met. He might also be one of the best writers in the world..

Ice jeezy & A freezy..
P1010079
AROE & JIROE.
Lakeside Essex, Although we also painted with the one like INTRO the pics just looked better like this, not say his piece wasn’t nice it certainly was.. JIROE is one of my favourite writers in the world..

WHITE OUTLINES… not scared too white.
P1010059
CIMG1980
Tarnerland Brighton/ West London.
The bottom piece painted with jano (not shown) is a personal favourite as i usually have a weird thing about ‘white’ outlines and i have no real clue why? the top piece was another shift towards what i’m doing at the moment.

EXCHANGER
P1010027
AROE sketch by JIROE.
Tarnerland Brighton, like i said a few lines before JIROE is a fav of mine so when he dropped a sketch of my name in my book i thought it’d be nice to have a go at putting it up. this is a while before i was involved in RIMES the EXCHANGE project..
Initially i wasn’t that happy with how it looked but after i started hacking into it with the cuts and chops it took on some new type of vibe that i ended up being very happy with.

BACK LIKE COOKED CRACK..
ASHFORD_09.2006
ATCH & AROE.
Ashford, ATCH was one of my writing partners from the 80’s so when we hooked up again after his near twenty year hiatus it was nice to bless our old stomping ground.
this is one of the first pieces i did where the outline changed colour (a trick i have never claimed to have invented) but certainly this was a big step in experimenting with the idea of switching the fill and outline at random which i frequently do now.

THE CHARACTERS.
canvas2 close up
AROE B BOYS.
Some people like them some people hate them, i like them. They’re basically my interpretation of the most stereotypical b boy character that you could think of. Ultimately i want them to look like they’ve been peeled of a New York subway car from the early 80’s just a few tricks to bring them up to date. They are always in profile looking either at my piece or away from it.. STANDARD..

THE WRECKSHOP PHILLY GOLDEN ERA VOLUME ONE.. & SOME OTHER SHANG..

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

The past year has been spent not only painting but going to and from the studio to put together a mix cd that pays tribute to the greatest hip hop city on the map.. The dopest dj’s, some of the illest mc’s and a catalogue of music that stands as testament to the bold statement in the opening sentence.. TUFF CREW were my favourite rap group ever, SCHOOLLY D is the king, HILL TOP HUSTLERS were the ultra talented youngsters and THREE TIMES DOPE are simply ill.. Not to let anyone go without credit the less well known but equally brilliant PHILL MOST CHILL, HIP CITY SWINGERS, JEWEL T, TOO BROWN, THIRD DYNASTY, TODD ONE and the incredible PLUSH BROTHERS all are thrown into the mix to put on display the sheer breadth of ill tunes that the city of brotherly love produced.

the cd is available from -

Concourse Records

Rarekind Records

Seeing as i’ve decided to use our website for some shameless self promotion i might as well push the promoting boat right out there..
While you’re at it you could always peep the mix cd that kicked off the ‘SOUNDMAKERS’ mix tape series..

AROE AND THE SOUNDMAKERS - ‘THE CROWN JEWELS’

Print The Crown Jewels

THE CROWN JEWELS is a mix of lost and forgotten UK hip hop gems from the golden era of british hip hop.
Some you might know and certainly some you won’t..
don’t sleep.

Incidently the second installment of the CROWN JEWELS uk krunchers is nearing completion and i can guarantee that the tracklisting on this’n will have the most knowledgable uk collectors scratching their domes..

ROID.
HEAVY ARTILLERY.
The crew is proud to announce the inclusion of ROID to its ranks.

ROID aka spagett.
ROID. Perugia Italy 2008.

We have been rolling with ROID for some time but he wasn’t ready to be pushed into the proverbial limelight until he had settled on a name that wasn’t going to change every week. Although it probably will…
We were supposed to drop this blog update on our return from Italy but due to a massive shortage of time we/I wasn’t able to get round to it..

"MSKINGS HAULIN' ASS"
REVOK ROID AROE. Perugia Italy 2008.

The short Italy trip was real good, our good friend TWESH hooked us up with BERO and DANC for our whirlwind spray bottle emptying trip around the beautiful Umbrian countryside. Special mention goes out to the other writers we met that were really cool - NOEK MOSK ENTH & DENO..
Italy is the closest thing to a graffiti paradise i can imagine, walls in the city centres battered with burners and the coolest most hospitable writers anywhere in europe make this a country that i will continue to visit.. the only downside is stanstead…
Aroe.

anyway i thought i’d make an announcement/Italy trip round up in one go as i’m still not great with the computer thing..
but while i’m at it here’s a few more ROID pieces for you to get your peepers round..

REVOK & AROE MSK ROCK THE BRIGHTON BOARDS again..

REVOK / AROE MSK.

I’LL SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD..
on route to the wall we were discussing how we like to finish our pieces and how they give the paintings that certain look so we thought it’d be an interesting idea for REVOK to sketch a rough blueprint for my piece and i drop the doo dads to give it that AROE look.
i think it came out kinda interesting as the piece really has that ‘hybrid’ type of feel.

The weather held out for a second day rainwise but it is spitefully cold and that wind is a tad urgent..

if this little collabo looks like it’s painted in the same place as the day befores featuring ‘EARTH’ it is.. we painted over the multicoloured pieces before anyone else got pics, so they’re exclusive to our site..
